Troop 127 Egg Drop

A scout is:
Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrift, Brave, Clean and Reverent....
AND.....
Resourceful!

Scouts of Troop 127 got to show how resourceful they are when participating in the 2013 Troop127 Egg Drop.

Scouts were given a raw chicken egg and empty milk carton container. The challenge was to engineer some mechanism which would prevent the egg from breaking when “Dropped from a ladder”.

Eggs were tested at Lakeridge Jr High school parking lot on the evening of February 26^th.

Scouts arrived to find a large drop zone cordoned off with safety tape.  Each scout and parent were asked to tell briefly describe their design.  Once each participant had a chance to speak, it was time to drop the eggs.

It did, however, quickly become apparent that one thing was missing.  It appeared the Mr. Rollins had forgotten to bring the ladder!

After a few moments of thought, Mr. Rollins suggested that the troop call his friend “Greg” who was close and probably had a ladder that the troop could borrow.
A phone call was made and Greg was put on speaker phone so the troop could jointly ask: “Can we please borrow your ladder?”  Greg agreed and said he would be right over.

Moments later, Greg arrived with his big, red Lake Oswego Fire Department ladder truck.  Lights blazing on the truck, Greg arrived and asked “I hear you all have some eggs that need to be dropped!”

Each scout’s egg was dropped from a height of about 25’.  Some survived and some didn’t but everyone had fun.

Once complete, it was time for the adults to compete.  However, an informal scout vote was taken.  It was determined that the scouts didn’t think it was fair for the adults to compete at the “same level” as scouts.  

Mr Rollins instructed the crew to raise the ladder… all the way to 105’!

This was another fantastic Troop 127 event where everyone had fun.

I want to especially thank Greg and his crew at Lake Oswego fire for their support and participation in the event.  This is surely something our boys will remember for a long time to come!
