Troop 127 Egg Drop

A scout is:
Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrift, Brave, Clean and Reverent....
AND.....
Resourceful!

Scouts of Troop 127 got to show how resourceful they are when participating in the 2013 Troop127 Egg Drop.

Scouts were given a raw chicken egg and empty milk carton container. The challenge was to engineer some mechanism which would prevent the egg from breaking when “Dropped from a ladder”.

Eggs were tested at Lakeridge Jr High school parking lot on the evening of February 26th.

Scouts arrived to find a large drop zone cordoned off with safety tape.  Each scout and parent were asked to tell briefly describe their design.  Once each participant had a chance to speak, it was time to drop the eggs.

It did, however, quickly become apparent that one thing was missing.  It appeared the Mr. Rollins had forgotten to bring the ladder!

After a few moments of thought, Mr. Rollins suggested that the troop call his friend “Greg” who was close and probably had a ladder that the troop could borrow.
A phone call was made and Greg was put on speaker phone so the troop could jointly ask: “Can we please borrow your ladder?”  Greg agreed and said he would be right over.

Moments later, Greg arrived with his big, red Lake Oswego Fire Department ladder truck.  Lights blazing on the truck, Greg arrived and asked “I hear you all have some eggs that need to be dropped!”

Each scout’s egg was dropped from a height of about 25’.  Some survived and some didn’t but everyone had fun.
Scouts whose eggs survived included:
  • Josh G
  • Ben F
  • Johnathan G
  • Tiernan H
  • Shaun Hedmann (Adult)

Once complete, it was time for the adults to compete.  However, an informal scout vote was taken.  It was determined that the scouts didn’t think it was fair for the adults to compete at the “same level” as scouts.

Mr Rollins instructed the crew to raise the ladder… all the way to 105’!

This was another fantastic Troop 127 event where everyone had fun.

I want to especially thank Greg and his crew at Lake Oswego fire for their support and participation in the event.  This is surely something our boys will remember for a long time to come!

Troop 127 Rocks Astoria!

It was a dark and stormy night, the seas were angry that February day when 5 scouts from Troop 127 ventured out into the "Graveyard of the Pacific". Each bravely venture out undeterred by the winds and the waves in search of that elusive creature, the Pacific Dungeness Crab.

In all seriousness, Troop 127 had a fantastic February campout thanks in no small part to the Astoria KOA. We planned to go crabbing, make liberal use of the heated swimming pool and knock out some rank advancement over the weekend. What we found far surpassed our expectations. The Astoria KOA recently built 3 new cabins especially with Scouting in mind. Two of the heated cabins would hold 16 scouts and the third worked as a kitchen/meal prep area. Only feet away was large campfire pit and running water. All this was fenced in and set up to host scouting events. The only thing missing, according to Dale the camp director, was a flag pole.

After hearing that, SPL David Rollins and his father worked out a deal with Elmers Flag and Banner to procure a 20' commercial grade flag pole. The troop brought this along and erected it as a service project for the camp in support of their efforts to accommodate more Scouting troops.

When not playing miniature golf, swimming in the pool, or bouncing on the large inflatable "pillow", scouts took turns boating in Astoria Bay. We were well on our way to a feast of crab when we lost our pots, but all scouts got to run the bay and had a great time.

I want to thank Josh Gibbens for his help in planning the food for 24 participants. This was an extraordinary feat for a young scouts just working on his First Class badge.

I'd also like to thank Esbon & Terri Griffen, Jay Fayloga, Sean Hedmann, Michele & Phil Huntington, John Walker and Janet Hover for their help as adult leaders.  This campout would not have been the success it was without your help!
